Ladies with Zest is a collection of curated, bespoke events that focus on entrepreneurs, activists, philanthropists, influencers and women who break boundaries.

For this latest edition, Saja Kamal, a Saudi female footballer who also plays for the Arsenal football ladies club is joined along with Amna Al Haddad, UAE weightlifter, inspirational speaker and the designer of the NIKE hijab and Elham Al Qasimi the first UAE National and Arab female to the North Pole. Moderated by MC, social media star and a fitness enthusiast in her own right, Enjy Kiwan.

With three unique, sporting personalities taking the stage, the theme for this event will be changing gender stereotypes in the region for women especially ones who are pursuing a career in sports. The impact, the lessons, the commitment, the strive and the discipline needed to succeed in sports are important characteristics that can be easily replicated in one's corporate and personal life. In this region and around the world, a woman’s voice is getting louder, stronger and overcoming all boundaries, including the world of sports and fitness.

Amna Al Haddad is considered a sports pioneer from this region. She is known for breaking the glass ceiling as an Olympic weightlifting athlete from the UAE.  In 2012, she decided to turn her passion into a career and became a full-time athlete. Within the same year, her hard work and dedication paid off when she made history for becoming the first Arab woman to compete in the Reebok CrossFit Asia Regionals in Seoul, South Korea. By 2013, Amna broke even more barriers for Arab women by competing internationally and becoming the first competitive weightlifter from the Gulf to do so in Hijab and qualifying for the Olympics. Amna is also the designer of the NIKE hijab and is featured as the only UAE national in the bestselling book “Stories for Rebel Girls”.

Saja Kamal is a Saudi female athlete, breaking boundaries and holding the torch for women and girls everywhere to chase their dreams regardless of environment and circumstances.  She has been playing football since she was 4 years old and now represents Saudi Arabia by carrying the flag (no official national team) and traveling to over 12 different countries playing football: she even played for the Saudi team in the GCC's first football tournament for women. While playing in the Arsenal Women’s league in Bahrain and London, Saja has also worked for the General Sports Authority in Riyadh and the Saudi Olympic Committee. In 2017 Saja along with 29 other women broke the Guinness world record at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro for the world highest FIFA regulated football match (11 a side team) at 20,000 feet in aid of an NGO called “Equal Playing Field”.

With Saja’s other passion being women’s rights, she feels empowered by the recent news that women will be able to drive in Saudi and that women can now enter football stadiums in KSA – “this is a huge step in the right direction; when you’re not given the same rights as men, women push harder to prove themselves and as more women are finally having a voice, we have a lot to say” – Saja in her own words and a glimpse into the discussion we will have on this panel.

In April 2010, Elham successfully completed a Last Degree ski expedition to the North Pole. During a three-week journey, Elham skied cross-country to the North Pole starting at 89 degrees latitude. As a result, she became the first Arab woman and the first UAE national to undertake a ski expedition to the North Pole. All supplies needed for the last 100 nautical miles to the North Pole were carried on a sledge pulled by herself. Elham was also fortunate enough to carry the Olympic torch at the London 2012 Olympics.

Since returning from her journey, Elham gives talks to young people and professionals across the UAE while also maintaining a full-time role as a Director leading and managing a Tech investment portfolio of more than $20bn at Mubadala Investment Company.  In parallel to her Investment management role, Elham is also a mother of three and an entrepreneur, investing in businesses aligned to her values of tech-enabled sustainable solutions to everyday needs. Her most recent venture, The Natural Laundry Company, provides a natural biodegradable alternative to traditional toxic dry cleaning.
